Cable cars, mountain railways, and chairlifts

The Hirzer, Taser, and Verdins-Tall cable cars and the Oberkirn-Grube chairlift are open from late March to the beginning of November and provide easy access to higher elevations. All other lifts in the area, such as the Merano/Meran 2000 mountain railway and the Falzeben-Merano/Meran 2000 cable car, open at the end of April.

The Maiser Waalweg trail

This 1.5-hour hike to Saltaus starts in the centre of Schenna and leads along the Rothalerweg trail no. 10B down to the Maiser Waalweg trail. Turn right here and walk to the “Waalerhaus” house. The mostly flat and partly shady path leads to the Hirzer cable car near Saltaus. For the return journey, we recommend taking the public bus or walking back to Schenna along the Riffianerweg trail.

From the hiking hotel in Schenna to Dorf Tirol

This easy 1.5-hour route takes you from Schenna to Dorf Tirol. Follow the Riffianerweg trail no. 1 into the valley as far as the Maiser Waalweg trail. Then take the Passersteig trail to the other side of the valley. Turn left here and walk along the Passirio/Passer river for a short distance on path no. 30. Turn right and follow trail no. 5A to Dorf Tirol. Once there, you can take the bus back to your starting point in Schenna.

From Klammeben to the Gompm Alm mountain pasture in the Hirzer region

This hike in the picturesque Hirzer region starts at Klammeben. Drive from Schenna through the Val Passiria/Passeiertal valley to Saltaus and the Hirzer valley station. Take the cable car up to Klammeben at 1,985 metres above sea level. Here you can follow trail no. 40 to the Hirzer mountain hut, then trail no. 5B to the Gompm Alm.

Conquering the Ivigna/Ifinger

You should plan a good four hours if you want to climb the Ivigna/Ifinger mountain. The trek starts in Falzeben in Hafling. From here, take the cable car up to the Piffinger Köpfl mountain restaurant at an altitude of 1,900 metres above sea level. Follow trail no. 3 slightly uphill towards Giogo di Pietramala/Missensteinjoch. Above the Waidmannalm hut, the path splits. Follow the wide path no. 19A up to the Oswaldscharte and on to the Kuhleiten hut. Now continue towards Piccolo Ivigna/Kleiner Ifinger on trail no. 19. The via ferrata begins approx. 50 metres below the summit. Depending on your fitness level and surefootedness, you can climb the summit of the Grande Picco Ivigna/Großer Ifinger from here.
